I really like the Merchant's Arch building, especially the actual arched walkway that leads into Temple Bar (Dublin's Cultural Centre). To the right is the also arched Halpenny Bridge and in the background the more modern Central Bank building (Architect: Sam Stephenson, 1975) - which I am not so fond of.

I spotted this beautiful old car today in Capel Street, and although a little worse for wear she was still turning a few heads. The Sunbeam Rapier was produced in Liverpool by the Roote's Group between 1967 and 1976 (They also produced the Hillman brand - e.g. the iconic Hillman Minx). Ah, they don't make them like that anymore :(

I once had an ambition to have a pint of Guinness in every Pub in Dublin. I think I managed about a half of them. These days I tend to be a bit more relaxed about my aspirations, so I have changed my plan - now I just want to have a coffee in every Coffee Shop in the city. The problem is they keep adding new ones, like this Chinese one which I just discovered off Capel Street and which is also an Art Gallery. Loved the coffee, loved the art!

Look after the Penneys ...

There is an old saying look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves meaning that if someone takes care not to waste small amounts of money, they will accumulate capital. But when shopping in Penneys Department store this could prove somewhat difficult.(Penneys are branded in markets outside Ireland as Primark)
I hate shopping but recently I hurriedly purchased some items of clothing in Penneys Henry Street outlet. I made a mental calculation of how much I was spending but was surprised to discover at the checkout that my shopping cost me about 8 Euro more than I had anticipated. A quick look at the receipt and at the items revealed that my maths were not at fault - my eyesight maybe! You see Penneys - rather deviously I do think, used a little trick of the trade. If you look at my photo collage you can see that some items are on display with a sign that gives the price (eg) - €7, while other signs say from €15 but with the from written in very small print. The items on the "from" stand START at €15 but are variously priced on an attached price tag. I had failed to notice the "from" in small print on the signs. What they are doing is completely legit of course - but a sneaky method of catching customers out.

This beautiful old church dating from 1803 is in the town of Aledo which is perched on top of a mountain in the Sierra Espuna range. The town is dominated by it's Moorish castle and has an interesting mix of old and new buildings as you can see from my photo.

Hearing this wonderfully romantic song on the radio reminded me of how technology has changed the world that we live in so much. Sending a letter by post (snail-mail in modern parlance) is now considered prehistoric - a 'love letter' would most likely now be sent by email, yahoo messenger, text message, or via twitter or facebook.
Actually how many other "letter" songs can you think of? Here's just a few: 'Return to Sender' - Elvis. 'The Letter' - The Box Tops. 'All My Loving' - The Beatles. 'Please Mr Postman' - The Carpenters.

Fureys Bar, Moyvalley

On my way back to Dublin from the Midlands I stopped for a coffee at Fureys, a charming little bar & restaurant near Moyvalley. I had often seen this place from the N4 as I drove past so today I decided to investigate. You have to drive down a little sliproad to get to it, but it's worth the effort because it's set in an idylic spot on the banks of the Royal canal. A blazing fire, friendly staff and a nice cappuccino .. happiness!
