All the post boxes in Ireland are painted green, but some, like this one have a story to tell! After we got independence from Britain in the early 1920's the cash-strapped new Irish Free State government could not afford to manufacture new boxes, so they came up with an Irish solution - they painted the old red boxes left over from British rule the lovely GREEN that you see on this one. And if you look at the box it still has the British monarch's coat of arms on it.
