Today I visited Charleville Castle near Tullamore, a fabulous Gothic-style castle which was designed by Francis Johnston (who also designed the GPO in Dublin) for Charles William Bury, the Earl of Charleville. The castle which is set in oak woodlands is now managed by a trust after falling into disrepair in recent years and volunteers from the local area and further afield help with maintaining the building and it's surroundings. Indeed on my last visit there one year ago I met a man from County Mayo and also a Canadian family busily weeding the gardens. And today as I left, a wedding party was just arriving for a photo shoot.
The mile long walk to the Castle gates through one of Ireland's oldest oak woods is just out of this world and I will feature photo's from my walk over the next few days.
