Today I visited the horse market in Smithfield Square which is not far from Dublin city centre. This market takes place on the first Sunday of every month and dates back hundreds of years. It is a unique event where animals are bought and sold and haggled over and it brings together a fascinating mix of country people, small farmers, Traveller's(Irish Gypsies), kids from Dublin's Inner City and from the vast housing estates like Finglas, Ballymun and Tallaght on the city's outskirts where they keep horses and ponies on any green areas.
Today I went not just to photograph the beautiful animals but also their owners who I think have quite distinctive features. I will post more of their photo's during this week.

Hi, just read your post. I went to the market that day, too, and wondered if you could read my post about it. It's here...

I'd be really interested in your feedback or if you agree with what I wrote.
it looks like there is more people on horse market than when I used to live at smithfield. why is so? why this became more popular? lovely area by the way, except on this one Sunday a month;)
Just visited Rick's blog and yes there is certainly an interesting debate going on about the Horse Market.
Smithfield was choc-a-bloc yesterday Maja, not sure why - perhaps because it was a really nice sunny day? Passed by this morning though and there was a pungent smell in the air!
