The Wellington Monument was built in the Phoenix Park to honour Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, an Anglo-Irish soldier and statesman who was one of the 19th century's leading military and political figures. He is most famous for, together with Blucher, defeating Napoleon at Waterloo.
At 200 feet high the Monument is the tallest obelisk in Europe and because Dublin is largely "flat" it is visible from many places around the city.
