Bridge Over The River Boyne

The Boyne River Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the Boyne west of Drogheda on the boundary between County Meath and County Louth on the M1 motorway. The bridge was designed by Roughan & O'Donovan and was built between 2000 and 2003. It is 352.5 M in length, 95 M in height and 34.5 M wide and carries 4 lanes of traffic. It is situated adjacent to where the Battle of the Boyne took place in 1690. Until recently it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in Ireland - the new Suir bridge now holds that honour. The design has won awards for Roughan & O'Donovan and the bridge certainly looks very impressive as you drive over it - my photos don't actually do it justice! It is so high that they had to put red lights on top as a warning to aircraft and as I drive past at night I always tell myself "I'm glad I haven't got the job of changing the light bulbs".
